Course: Art, Injustice, and Resistance
Het honours vak Art, Injustice, and Resistance is onderdeel van het Navigating Insecure Futures Program aan de Universiteit Utrecht.
Als programmaleider en docent laat ik studenten kennismaken met de intersectie van theater en sociale rechtvaardigheid. De nadruk ligt hierbij op het collectieve proces van leren en op artistiek onderzoek. In het tweede deel van het vak werken de studenten gezamenlijk toe naar een publieke theatervoorstelling of performance over een eigen gekozen thema.
Op 14 december 2024 voerden de studenten hun performance Drowning out op in Theater Kikker in Utrecht.
Drowning Out is a symphony of cacophony and silence, an ode to the drowning cries of a world on fire. Embodying the paradoxes of modern existence: creation and destruction, unity and isolation, truth and its eternal absence, the performance stitches fragments of collapsing ice, fleeting breaths, and echoes of voices silenced by oppression into a tapestry of collective grief and resistance. Drowning Out is a haunting tapestry of grief and resistance, blending creation, destruction, unity, isolation, cacophony and silence.
Op 14 december 2025 werd de performance She Devils opgevoerd in Theater Kikker in Utrecht. Ook exposeerden de studenten hun persoonlijke projecten in het theater café.
She Devils is a performance about six women navigating the inescapability of gendered expectations within the capitalist system. We meet the Mother worn down by care, the Banker hiding loneliness, the Athlete carrying trauma, the Politician balancing ideals and compromise, the Activist caught between hope and exhaustion, and the Student facing an uncertain future.
The piece highlights social reproduction: the everyday, often invisible labour that keeps society going while passing norms and inequalities from one generation to the next.
